1959 – Where It All Began

In the heart of Michigan, with just $250 and a dream, Lloyd Charles Barnhart laid the first stone of something bigger than himself.

It was May 1st, 1959 — a time when handshake deals still meant something, and your name was only as strong as your word.

With a shovel in hand and a reputation for honesty, hard work, and neighborly respect, Lloyd founded Barnhart Construction Company.

He didn’t just build roads or dig trenches — he built trust, one project at a time. The dirt under his boots wasn’t just part of the job — it was part of who he was.

1960s–1970s – A Son Learns the Trade

From a young age, Lloyd James “Jim” Barnhart was never far from his father’s side. Whether riding along in the truck or handing over tools, he soaked up more than just the skills of the trade — he inherited the ethic, pride, and grit that ran through the family line. As Lloyd’s journey came to a close and he eventually stepped away from the business, Jim knew the story wasn’t over. It was just time for a new chapter.

1972 – Carrying the Torch

In 1972, Jim officially launched Barnhart & Son Construction Company, naming it not just as a tribute — but as a promise.

This wasn’t just business. It was family.

Under Jim’s leadership, the company grew into a trusted name for excavation and underground utilities, serving homes, businesses, and communities across Mid-Michigan.

People didn’t just hire Jim — they called the Barnharts. They knew the job would be done right, or it wouldn’t be done at all.

1990s–2000s – A Grandson in the Making

As the years rolled on, a third pair of boots showed up at the job site — this time worn by Logan James Barnhart, Jim’s son and Lloyd’s grandson.

At just 12 years old, Logan wasn’t there for show. He spent summers learning the ropes, getting dirty, and earning his place — not by name, but by effort.

Over time, he stepped into bigger shoes, operating machinery, laying pipe, and proving himself just like his father and grandfather before him.

Today – Still Here. Still Digging Deep.

Now at the helm, Logan carries on the legacy with the same commitment that started it all — integrity, precision, and getting it right the first time.

Today, Barnhart & Son Inc. stands as a three-generation, family-run company, proudly rooted in Lansing — the same community that shaped them.
